Two-Storey Shophouse Collapses During Renovation In Melaka, No Injuries Reported

Shophouse Collapses In Taman Kota Laksamana

A two-storey shophouse in Taman Kota Laksamana, Melaka collapsed at around 5pm on Saturday, 18 July, sending debris crashing onto the street and startling people nearby. According to footage shared by Oriental Daily, the building completely gave way as residents and visitors at a nearby night market watched in shock. Videos also showed firefighters cordoning off the area shortly after the collapse.

Four Workers Escaped Safely

The Melaka Fire and Rescue Department confirmed that no casualties were found following a search operation and checks with the relevant agencies. According to Malay Mail, the shophouse was undergoing renovation when it collapsed. “The fire and rescue team conducted a search at the collapse site and found that no victims were involved in the building collapse. Joint investigations with witnesses and the building owner found that four workers — three Bangladeshi men in their 30s and a Rohingya man in his 40s — were believed to have escaped unharmed, and no one was trapped,” said Melaka Fire and Rescue Department director Mohd Zaidi Ma’at.

Two Cars Damaged, Public Told To Stay Away

He added that the collapse of the 30-by-80-foot shophouse only crushed two vehicles parked nearby, a Toyota Vios and a Proton Iriz. After confirming that the site no longer posed a danger to the public, firefighters handed the area over to the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) for further action. MBMB has since issued a public notice prohibiting anyone from approaching the site due to the risk of further structural collapse.
