Vietnam’s Musang King Prices Crash, Farmer Considers Cutting Down 50 Trees
Musang King Prices Fall To Record Low
Musang King durian growers in Vietnam are facing their toughest season yet after prices dropped to the lowest level since the premium variety was first commercially cultivated in the country. According to VN International Express, farmgate prices have fallen to between 50,000 and 70,000 Vietnamese dong (approximately RM8 to RM11) per kilogram. A grower identified as Dao, who owns a durian orchard in Gia Lai Province, said the current prices are the lowest he has ever seen. He also revealed that his profit from selling two tonnes of Musang King this season fell to around 40 million Vietnamese dong, almost half of what he earned last year.
Farmer Considers Replacing His Orchard
Dao said Musang King previously fetched between 80,000 and 150,000 Vietnamese dong (around RM13 to RM25) per kilogram last year. However, medium-quality fruit is now selling for only about 50,000 Vietnamese dong (roughly RM8) per kilogram. Faced with shrinking returns, he is now considering cutting down 50 Musang King trees after the current season and replacing them with another durian variety.
Entire Durian Market Also Under Pressure
The price decline is not limited to Musang King, as Vietnam’s overall durian market has also weakened this year. Thailand’s Monthong durian is currently selling for between 63,000 and 69,000 Vietnamese dong (around RM10 to RM11) per kilogram, while Vietnam’s locally grown Ri6 variety is priced between 33,000 and 39,000 Vietnamese dong (about RM5 to RM6) per kilogram. Compared to the same period last year, prices for both varieties have reportedly fallen by around 30 to 50 percent.
