A Political Era in Sabah Comes to an End

Sabah woke to sombre news as Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, Chairman of Barisan Nasional Sabah and one of the most recognisable voices in East Malaysian politics, passed away at 1.46 a.m. in a private hospital in Kota Kinabalu. The announcement was made by his son, Naim Kurniawan Moktar, in an emotional post on Facebook.

The 67-year-old had reportedly been battling kidney failure and was admitted to the hospital the day before.

A Loss Felt Across the Political Spectrum

Leaders and close associates rushed to the hospital upon hearing of his condition, including Sabah’s Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Tun Musa Aman. Despite political differences across the decades, Bung Moktar remained a figure many respected for his unapologetic boldness and his influence in shaping Sabah’s political identity.

From Kampung Bilit to Parliament: A Remarkable Journey

Born on 14 September 1959 in Kinabatangan, Bung Moktar’s early years were rooted in community-level service before he entered national politics.

His career highlights include:

  • Member of Parliament for Kinabatangan since 1999

  • State Assemblyman (ADUN) for Lamag

  • Former Deputy Chief Minister I Sabah

  • Sabah’s Minister of Works from 2020 to 2023

  • Former Chairman of FELCRA Berhad

Through controversies, cabinet roles, victories and losses, Bung Moktar remained — undeniably — one of Sabah’s most influential and recognisable political personalities.

A Polarising But Impactful Political Force

While some admired his outspokenness, others criticised his confrontational style. Yet, one thing is clear: Bung Moktar left a deep imprint on Malaysian politics.

He represented a political class that rarely shied away from voicing opinions, especially on issues affecting Sabah’s rights, development and representation.

His passing opens a chapter of reflection for many about leadership, state identity, and the evolving political dynamics in East Malaysia.

A Legacy Defined by Influence and Controversy

Whether celebrated or critiqued, Bung Moktar stood as a symbol of Sabah’s assertiveness on the national stage.

His journey from a small village in Kinabatangan to becoming a central figure in Parliament embodies a political narrative that is uniquely Malaysian.

As Sabah grieves, the nation also pauses to acknowledge a life lived with force, conviction, and undeniable impact.
