PMX Confirms No Electricity Tariff Hike – But Is It Really True?

Source: The Rakyat Post
The ongoing debate about Malaysia’s electricity tariff continues, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stepping in to clarify the situation.
What’s Really Happening?
Recently, reports suggested that electricity tariffs would rise by up to 14% in the second half of the year, sparking concern among Malaysians. However, Anwar has since dismissed these claims, stating that his previous comments were taken out of context.
The controversy began when Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal questioned the government’s stance on electricity tariff adjustments. In response, Anwar stated that tariffs must increase to fund national development, including education and assistance for the underprivileged.
“Small, Small, Don’t Worry” – But Is That Reassuring?
Speaking in Dewan Rakyat, Anwar reassured the public that 85% of households would not be affected and that businesses would not bear a heavy burden from any adjustments.
However, he also mentioned that any future increase would follow the Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT) mechanism, which allows tariff rates to fluctuate based on fuel costs. The next review is scheduled for July 2025, meaning changes could still be on the horizon.
TL;DR – No Increase for Now, But the Future is Uncertain
✔ No immediate increase in electricity tariffs
✔ 85% of households remain subsidized
✔ Businesses reportedly won’t be heavily impacted
✔ Next tariff review in July 2025
Despite Anwar’s clarification, public skepticism remains high. Many believe that, like previous tax policies (GST, SST), any cost increase will eventually be passed down to consumers.
Will the government truly keep tariffs stable, or is this just a temporary relief? Malaysians remain on edge.
