If staying alive means losing parts of your body, what choice will you make?
A 37-year-old Malaysian beautician had no choice but to say goodbye to ALL her limbs to survive. The beautician, Ai Ling, who worked in Singapore, initially thought she was just dealing with food poisoning when she felt unwell.
“I had a fever and abdominal pain, but it got better after my first visit and taking some medicine,” Ai Ling said.
However, during her second visit, the doctor noticed something odd and said she needed to be admitted to the emergency room. That’s when Ai Ling’s world turned upside down.
She was diagnosed with a bacterial infection, and due to the severity of the infection, her brain was not getting enough oxygen. To keep her alive, the doctor injected a drug to keep the blood flowing to her body, but it came with a heavy price – she might lose some parts of her body.
Initially, Ai Ling thought she might just lose some fingers. But then, she noticed her limbs turning black and feeling heavier.
“The doctor said the cells had died and the bacterial infection had caused sepsis. If I was going to stay alive, my limbs had to be amputated,” Ai Ling explained.
By December 19 last year, Ai Ling had all her limbs amputated. She had to use up her savings and spend extra for the medical bills – approximately RM1.04 million!
“A prosthetic hand alone costs about RM40,000, and RM50,000 for a prosthetic leg. I was discharged from the hospital in January this year.”
Despite her condition, Ai Ling is determined to keep working. She hopes to continue her treatment in Singapore and find a suitable job after her recovery. She is willing to share her experience with others facing similar challenges to help them cope.
With support from friends and her boss, Ai Ling managed to get through this tough situation. We wish nothing but the best for Ai Ling in the future.
