The Northeast Monsoon is expected to start from November 11 until March 2024.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Northeast Monsoon or winter monsoon in the country is expected to start on November 11 and continue until March 2024. The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) predicts that during this period, four to six episodes of heavy rain are likely to occur. In the early phase of the Northeast Monsoon from November 2023 to January 2024, heavy rain episodes are expected in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor, and western Sarawak. .

However, if the monsoon winds are strong and at the same time there is a low-pressure weather system, continuous heavy rain can occur in other states in Malaysia. Prolonged heavy rain for several days can lead to flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas. If continuous heavy rain coincides with high tide events and storm surges, the risk of flooding can become more extreme.

Additionally, MetMalaysia says that continuous and strong northeast winds can cause rough seas, the risk of rising sea levels, and large waves in the South China Sea. Meanwhile, in the final phase of the Northeast Monsoon, from February to March 2024, the northern Peninsula (Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu), Sabah, Labuan, and northern Sarawak are expected to experience less rain.

The hot and dry weather expected from March 2024 may lead to heatwaves. This situation is due to the expected continuation of the El Nino phenomenon until mid-2024 and the positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) until the first quarter of 2024. Therefore, the public is advised to be prepared for the Northeast Monsoon and stay alert to information, advice, forecasts, and weather warnings issued by MetMalaysia.
