Twin Earthquakes Shake Venezuela
Two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude struck the same region in Venezuela on Wednesday local time, causing panic among residents and damaging several buildings. According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), the tremors prompted people in the capital city of Caracas to evacuate buildings and gather in open areas. As of the latest reports, authorities have not confirmed any casualties resulting from the earthquakes.
USGS Confirms Two Major Tremors Within Seconds
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the first earthquake, measuring 7.2 magnitude, occurred approximately 21 kilometres west of the coastal city of Morón at around 10.04pm local time. Just moments later, a second and stronger 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck about 45 kilometres away. USGS described the incident as a doublet earthquake sequence, explaining that the main 7.5-magnitude event was preceded by the earlier 7.2-magnitude foreshock only 39 seconds before.
Authorities Order Evacuations As Damage Assessment Continues
Venezuela’s Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello urged residents to leave their homes as a precaution while emergency assessments were carried out. He also confirmed that gas supplies had been shut off in several buildings to reduce the risk of secondary incidents. AFP journalists on the ground reported scenes of panic inside a shopping mall in Caracas following the second tremor, with shoppers rushing towards emergency exits. One shop owner, Heidi Romero, described the experience as frightening, saying she and others were evacuated through emergency staircases as the building shook.
