Vendors Draw Criticism Outside Newly Reopened Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad

Historic Landmark Reopens To Public

Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad officially reopened to the public on 2 February after the completion of its first phase of refurbishment.

Since then, both locals and tourists have flocked to the heritage site, especially at night when the iconic structure is illuminated against Kuala Lumpur’s skyline.

Located at Dataran Merdeka, the building remains one of the capital’s most recognisable landmarks and holds significant historical value. There is no entrance fee for visitors who wish to view the building.

Beverage Stalls Trigger Online Reaction

However, while many celebrated the reopening, some Malaysians voiced concern over beverage vendors operating outside the building.

Several viral Threads posts showed stalls positioned in front of the landmark, with users claiming that the presence of vendors disrupts the aesthetic of the historic site.

Some commenters urged Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to monitor the situation.

One recurring claim in the comment section was that “local Malaysians would never do this” and that the operators were allegedly “not local.” These allegations, however, remain unverified.

Mixed Public Responses

The situation quickly sparked debate online.

While some criticised the stalls for potentially affecting the visual appeal of the landmark, others pointed out that small-scale vendors are a common part of Malaysian urban culture, particularly in high-footfall tourist areas.

There were also concerns raised about cleanliness and littering, although no official statement has confirmed any violations.

No Official Action Announced

As of now, authorities have not issued a formal response regarding the presence of the vendors.

The Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad, built between 1894 and 1897 in the Moorish Revival architectural style, continues to serve as a major attraction in the River of Life heritage zone.

Whether the vendor presence will lead to regulatory action remains to be seen.
