Late July 2024 saw the rise of a wild conspiracy theory claiming that U.S. President Joe Biden is dead, causing a stir on social media.
The rumor started after Biden tested positive for COVID-19 and subsequently disappeared from the public eye, combined with his sudden announcement to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.
The theory kicked off on July 17, 2024, when news broke that Biden had contracted COVID-19 during a trip to Las Vegas. He reportedly had “mild symptoms” and went into quarantine at his Delaware home, staying out of the spotlight for five days.
On July 21, 2024, Biden made an official announcement on his social media accounts that he was stepping down as a presidential candidate for 2024. However, his absence from public appearances and questions about the authenticity of his signatures fueled speculations that he might actually be dead.
The conspiracy spread like wildfire on social media, especially on X (formerly known as Twitter). Users demanded Biden to make a public appearance to prove he’s still alive. On July 22, 2024, user @MattWallace888 posted an AI-generated image of Biden with the caption, “RUMORS ARE CIRCULATING THAT JOE BIDEN IS DEAD.” The post went viral, amassing over 10,000 retweets and 77,000 likes in a single day.
Right-wing groups quickly jumped on the bandwagon, with some claiming Biden might indeed be dead. On the same day, internet personality Charlie Kirk questioned the timeline of events in a post that garnered over 18,000 retweets and 64,000 likes.
U.S. representative Lauren Boebert also chimed in, demanding that Biden appear in public to prove he’s still alive. Her message went viral as well, with more than 4,400 retweets and 26,000 likes.
The theory continued to gain traction, sparking heated discussions across social media platforms. While many found the conspiracy far-fetched, it nonetheless captivated the attention of countless netizens.
