Malaysia’s Passport Just Climbed To No. 2 In The World, Sharing The Spot With Singapore

Malaysia’s passport has climbed to second place in the 2026 Global Passport Power Rank, sharing the position with Singapore. Both countries have a Mobility Score of 175, behind the UAE at 182. Passport Index currently lists 121 visa-free, 46 visa-on-arrival and eight eTA destinations for Malaysian passport holders. 

Malaysia And Singapore Have The Same Score, But Not The Same Travel Access

Malaysia has officially entered some seriously exclusive passport territory. The 2026 Global Passport Power Rank places the Malaysian passport in second place alongside Singapore, with both recording a Mobility Score of 175. But having the same score doesn’t mean Malaysians and Singaporeans have identical travel arrangements. Passport Index currently gives Malaysia visa-free access to 121 destinations, another 46 with visa on arrival and eight through an eTA. Singapore reaches the same overall score through a different combination, with 140 visa-free destinations and 35 offering visa on arrival. That distinction matters because the ranking measures overall mobility rather than simply counting how many countries allow completely visa-free entry.  

There’s Only One Passport Ahead Of Malaysia Right Now

Sitting above Malaysia and Singapore is the United Arab Emirates, which leads Passport Index with a Mobility Score of 182. The gap below Malaysia is remarkably small: Spain sits in third place with 174, just one point behind, while a large group of countries including France, Germany, Japan, Italy and Switzerland currently share fourth place with scores of 173.   For Malaysians, the practical takeaway is that the passport now provides relatively easy access across a huge portion of the world. Passport Index calculates Malaysia’s current world reach at 88%, although 23 destinations still require Malaysian travellers to obtain a visa.

There is one important catch whenever passport rankings go viral: there isn’t one universal global ranking system. This No. 2 position comes specifically from Passport Index’s Global Passport Power Rank, which ranks passports according to their total Mobility Score.   Passport Index even has another table called the Individual Passport Power Rank, where Singapore sits second and Malaysia third despite both having a Mobility Score of 175.   Other organisations, including the Henley Passport Index, use their own methodologies and can produce different rankings. So the accurate headline isn’t that every passport ranking in the world now places Malaysia second. It’s that Malaysia has reached No. 2 in Passport Index’s 2026 Global Passport Power Rank, and that is still a significant jump for Malaysian travellers.
