What started as a festive school event in Pekan Nanas, Pontian, Johor, quickly descended into chaos after a group of attendees became dissatisfied with liquor auction prices, resulting in a violent brawl and the arrest of 18 men.
School Hall Turns Into Riot Scene
The incident took place at approximately 11:30 PM on July 4, during an event held in a school hall where alcoholic beverages were being auctioned. Tensions escalated when a group of individuals became agitated by the bidding prices.
In a sudden turn of events, they began hurling chairs toward the stage, triggering a fight that forced the event into disarray.
Suspects Aged 17 to 48 Arrested by Police
Pontian District Police Chief Superintendent Mohammad Shofee Tayib confirmed that officers from the Criminal Investigation Department were dispatched to the scene and successfully arrested 18 men aged between 17 and 48.
All suspects are now being investigated under:
- Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting with weapons, which carries a penalty of up to five years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both, and
- Section 427 for committing mischief, which carries a penalty of up to two years in prison, a fine, or both.
Police: No Tolerance for Public Disorder
Superintendent Mohammad Shofee stated that the fight stemmed from dissatisfaction over the alcohol auction prices and stressed that law enforcement will not compromise on acts of criminal violence that threaten public order.
The police are also calling for public cooperation and urging people not to spread misleading or unverified videos of the incident online.
