Johor Bahru Homeless Man Forgives Teens Over Viral Chicken Bone Incident
Homeless Man Speaks Out After Viral Humiliation
The homeless man who became the subject of public outrage after receiving leftover rice and chicken bones from three teenagers in Johor Bahru has shared his side of the story.
Known as Dennis, the 47-year-old from Perak was sleeping on Jalan Meldrum when the teenagers handed him a food package from a popular fried chicken franchise.
The Moment He Received the Food
A short video, less than a minute long, shows the teenagers eating fried chicken before placing the bones in a rice packet and giving it to Dennis.
“I was struggling when the three teenagers called me because I was still lying down and didn’t expect the package they brought to contain leftover food,” he said.
Dennis admitted he was shocked when he opened the package but chose not to be angry.
“I was shocked to find leftover food in the package, but I wasn’t angry. I just thanked them. At that time, they also provided me with a different package that included proper food,” he added.
Choosing Forgiveness Over Anger
Dennis said he was unaware the teenagers were filming until others in the area informed him about the viral video. Despite the humiliation, he holds no grudge.
“I forgive their actions and hope it doesn’t happen again to other homeless people. After the incident, several residents came to see me, gave me food and asked about my well-being. Some even apologised for what the three teenagers did,” he shared.
When asked about eating the leftovers, Dennis replied:
“Can eat ‘ah’? Definitely, because it’s my job (to accept food). Every food they bring to me, I have respect. I’m very much thankful for them.”

Known for His Kindness
Residents describe Dennis as different from other homeless individuals. Despite his circumstances, he often helps elderly people and those with mobility issues, and he is known for keeping his surroundings clean.
He became homeless about a year ago following a head injury that left him unable to work. Since then, he has been living in front of Merling Tower in Johor Bahru.
Police Investigation and Public Debate
One of the teenagers has apologised, claiming they had Dennis’ permission to film and describing it as a “social experiment”. However, the explanation failed to calm public anger.
The three individuals, aged 14, 18, and 19, were detained and later released on police bail. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating the video, which has been widely criticised as exploitative and unethical.
