Singaporean Wins RM800,000 Jackpot At Genting, Faces Border Hurdles
Singaporean Woman Wins RM800,000 Jackpot At Genting
A Singaporean businesswoman’s family trip to Genting Highlands turned into a high-stakes drama when she hit a RM800,000 jackpot in April — only to struggle with the challenge of bringing the winnings back across the border.
The lucky winner, 28-year-old Sherylynn Kok, triggered the jackpot feature on a slot machine, walking away with the grand payout. Casino staff verified her win and handed her eight bundles of RM100,000, all in RM10,000 notes. The amount was so large it had to be stuffed into a backpack.
Security Escorts And A Sleepless Night
Kok and her family were escorted by security guards inside the casino, but they were told that protection ended once they stepped outside.
Concerned about safety, the family took turns staying awake to guard the cash overnight in their hotel room.
Banking Roadblocks And Border Issues
The jackpot joy was short-lived when Kok realised she couldn’t easily transfer the money home. Since it was a weekend, banks were closed and she couldn’t immediately wire the funds.
To make matters worse, they learned that sending the money required a Malaysian bank account — something she did not have.
At the airport, they were informed that exporting such large sums of cash out of Malaysia requires approval from Bank Negara. As a result, Kok’s parents returned to Singapore while she and her boyfriend stayed behind to sort out the mess.
Opening A Malaysian Account To Secure Funds
The next day, Kok opened a dual-currency account with OCBC Malaysia, finally allowing her to complete the transfer process.
Despite the dramatic situation, she chose to keep the money safe in a standard bank account rather than make risky investments.
Keeping A Level-Headed View On Jackpot Fortune
Kok admitted she is not the type to splurge, pointing out that many who come into sudden wealth end up spending recklessly.
“I don’t think SGD200,000 will last you a lifetime,” she said, noting that her winnings gave her more time flexibility rather than instant financial freedom.
Her experience serves as a reminder of the strict procedures and financial regulations involved in moving large sums of money across borders — even when the cash comes from a legitimate casino win.
