Malaysian Househusband in Japan Rejoices After Finding Nasi Lemak in Tokyo!

A Malaysian househusband living in Japan recently shared his excitement on TikTok after discovering a Malaysian restaurant in Shibuya, Tokyo. Former HITZ FM Morning Crew presenter, Arnold Loh, who now resides in Japan, expressed his homesickness and craving for authentic Malaysian food in his video caption, stating, “The stomach wants what it wants.”

Taking viewers on a tour of Malay Asian Cuisine, a restaurant decorated with Malaysian flags and posters of Sabah and Sarawak, Arnold was thrilled to find a place that offers some of Malaysia’s most beloved dishes.

A Taste of Malaysia in the Heart of Tokyo

The restaurant serves a variety of Malaysian favourites, including nasi lemak, char kuey teow, prawn mee, sambal fried rice, curry chicken with white rice, mee goreng, and even ikan goreng tiga rasa.

Sharing his review, Arnold noted that the char kuey teow was the standout dish, describing it as having “enough wok hei and very tasty.” Meanwhile, he felt the nasi lemak was decent but wasn’t impressed by the prawn mee, humorously stating, “Ah, memang tak payah la.”

Visited by Malaysian Icons & Stocked with Homegrown Products

Surprisingly, this humble eatery has attracted notable Malaysian figures such as Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, Minister of Economic Affairs Rafizi Ramli, and even members of the Malaysian comedy group Sepahtu.

Adding to the nostalgic experience, the restaurant also sells Malaysian food products like Ayam Brand Kaya Jam and Brahim’s Kuah Masak Lemak, giving it a kedai runcit (mini-market) feel.

Is It Worth the Price?

Dining in Tokyo doesn’t come cheap, and Arnold revealed that he spent RM160 for three dishes for two people. While the price is steep, he admitted that when you’ve been away from authentic Malaysian food for so long, it’s worth the splurge once in a while.

For those planning to visit Tokyo, here’s a bonus—the restaurant is Halal-certified, making it a must-visit spot for Muslim travelers craving a taste of home!
