M’sian Fired After Refusing to Cancel Approved 7-Day Leave
Employee Fired Despite Having Leave Approved
A Malaysian worker has allegedly been fired after refusing to cancel a 7-day vacation that was approved by their company a month earlier.
The incident was shared by netizen 打工小智 on XiaoHongShu, who recounted how their friend was punished for “insubordination” simply because they chose to continue with their planned holiday.
Employer Demanded Cancellation at the Last Minute
According to the post, the employee had applied for leave one month in advance and received official approval from their company. With flights and travel plans already booked, everything seemed set.
But as the holiday approached, the employer unexpectedly asked them to cancel their leave, claiming there was an “urgent matter” at work.
The worker was left shocked. “Everything was already arranged, plane tickets were purchased, and the employer suddenly called and asked them to cancel everything!” wrote the netizen.
Employee Chose to Proceed With Vacation
Faced with the sudden demand, the employee explained that cancelling last minute was impossible. However, their employer questioned their priorities, allegedly saying: “What’s more important now, work or fun? If you don’t come back (to the office), you won’t have to come back later!”
Believing the company should be responsible for its own poor planning, the employee went ahead with the trip.
“They thought, ‘I’ve already prepared everything. The employer’s inability to manage things is their problem. Why should I cancel my vacation?’” explained the netizen.
Termination Letter Awaited Upon Return
When the employee returned from their trip, they were met with a termination letter from the human resources (HR) department. The stated reason: disobeying superiors during work.
The case has raised serious questions about employees’ rights in Malaysia, with many netizens debating whether workers should be forced to sacrifice their personal time when leave had already been formally approved.
“Can taking a leave of absence cost you your job these days?” the netizen asked, ending their post by highlighting the lack of respect for employees’ right to rest.
