What Is “Freefly”?
Unlike cats and dogs, birds can be much harder to handle as pets due to their natural instincts to explore. Some bird owners train their parrots for “freefly” sessions, which are outdoor flight exercises where the birds can soar freely before returning to their owners.
However, these activities come with high risks, as pet birds may encounter predators or get lost.
Parrot Chased by White-Bellied Sea Eagle
According to bird enthusiast @abamparrot on TikTok, the parrot belonged to his friend and was taking part in a freefly session when the incident occurred.
The video showed a white-bellied sea eagle (WBSE) swooping toward Pablo in the Bukit Antarabangsa area. Abam explained that the eagle likely lost its way, as the species does not typically nest in that region.
Pablo Flew Into the Forest to Escape
During the chase, Pablo’s handlers repeatedly blew a whistle, a sound cue trained to call him back, but the frightened parrot ignored it and fled deeper into the forest to evade the predator.
The eagle made several attempts to grab Pablo midair, but the clever bird managed to dodge each time. Eventually, Pablo disappeared into the nearby woods, sparking concern among onlookers.
Pablo Rescued Safe and Healthy
In an update, Abam confirmed that Pablo was rescued safely the next morning. He explained that parrots typically seek safe places to roost (rest) at dusk and often remain unresponsive until sunrise.
“We already knew his location using a GPS tracker, so we let him rest overnight and went back early in the morning,” said Abam.
“We released a few experienced parrots to call him out, and not long after, Pablo responded to their calls and returned to us safely.”
Pablo was found healthy, though slightly traumatized from the incident.
Netizens React, “It Felt Like a National Geographic Scene!”
The video, which has since gained over 1.7 million views, left many viewers on edge. Some expressed how tense the situation was, while others praised Pablo’s quick reflexes.
“My heart stopped when the eagle swooped in,” wrote one user.
“It’s like watching National Geographic in real life!” another commented.
Many also thanked Abam and his team for sharing the rescue and educating bird owners on the risks of freeflying their pets in open areas.
