I’m Sorry I Butchered Roti Canai” Jaime Tan Apologises After ‘Roti Kanai’ Slip On MasterChef
Jaime Tan Responds To Backlash Over Roti Canai Pronunciation

After winning the “World Cup Cookoff” challenge on Season 16 of MasterChef, also known as MasterChef: Global Gauntlet, with her Malaysian-inspired dish, Malaysian-American contestant Jaime Tan found herself facing criticism online for pronouncing Roti Canai as “Roti Kanai” during the show. The 27-year-old later addressed the issue through a video shared on her Threads account on 9 June, offering a heartfelt apology to those who were disappointed by the mistake. She explained that the mispronunciation was unintentional and said she now understands the correct pronunciation of the beloved Malaysian dish.
Says Representing Malaysia Meant Everything To Her
In her apology, Jaime admitted she never intended to misrepresent Malaysian cuisine on international television and expressed regret over upsetting many Southeast Asians. “It makes me sad to disappoint so many Southeast Asians. I didn’t mean to misrepresent a national dish on television. I know how important it is to people, so I just wanted to say I’m sorry,” she said. Jaime also shared that although she was not raised in Malaysia, her father is originally from Johor and her late grandparents owned a kopitiam. She added that representing Malaysia on the global stage meant a great deal to her, making the criticism especially painful. “Representing Malaysia on the show was just so meaningful to me, so of course I’m upset with myself,” she admitted.
Takes Pride In Showcasing Malaysian Cuisine Despite Challenges
Jaime also spoke about the pressure of preparing roti canai within MasterChef’s 60-minute challenge despite knowing the dough traditionally requires hours of preparation and often rests overnight to achieve its signature texture. She acknowledged that her version was far from perfect but chose to take the risk because she wanted to celebrate Malaysian food and culture on an international platform. Although the criticism affected her, she said she had already been her own harshest critic and remained grateful for the support she received. Ending her video on a lighter note, Jaime joked that while she may not have pronounced “roti canai” correctly, she could still crack open a durian with her bare hands, something she considered a uniquely Malaysian skill, before once again saying, “Much love to Malaysia. I’m sorry I butchered Roti Canai.”
