Malaysian Tourist Apologises After Viral Remarks About Chinese People Spark Backlash
Viral Videos Trigger Widespread Criticism

A Malaysian tourist has issued a public apology after videos from her trip to China sparked backlash on social media. The controversy began when clips originally posted on TikTok by user @ekyn.wong were reshared across multiple platforms, including Threads and Chinese social media. The videos showed a group of Malaysian tourists making remarks about people they encountered during their travels. Although the original clips were later removed, they continued to circulate online and drew criticism from both Malaysian and international audiences.
Remarks About Locals Draw Negative Reactions
One of the videos showed members of the group waiting to board a bus while commenting about an unpleasant smell. Another clip featured remarks directed at an e-hailing driver, with comments suggesting that local people did not maintain proper hygiene. The videos quickly attracted criticism from social media users, many of whom described the behaviour as disrespectful and damaging to Malaysia’s image abroad. Some also expressed concern that such actions could affect Malaysians living, studying or working overseas, particularly in China where the videos had gained attention.
Public Apology Follows Legal Warning Statement
As criticism intensified, Nur Asyiqin Mohd Dalil, who uses the TikTok username @ekyn.wong, initially shared a legal statement through her account. The statement said legal action had been initiated against parties accused of spreading defamatory remarks, false allegations and personal information about her and her family. However, on 20 June, Asyiqin released a public apology on TikTok, acknowledging that her actions may have offended others. She described the comments as a spontaneous reaction, stated that she had no intention of insulting anyone and admitted that her behaviour had been excessive. She also accepted responsibility for the incident, thanked those who offered advice and criticism, and promised to learn from the experience and be more mindful of public sensitivities in the future.
