This Smartphone Camera Can Actually Move By Itself

Smartphone brands have spent years competing over megapixels, bigger sensors and better zoom. HONOR, however, has taken a completely different approach with the HONOR Robot Phone. The device features what HONOR calls the industry’s smallest 4DoF gimbal system. A tiny motor allows its camera to physically move instead of staying fixed to the phone. HONOR says it has also reduced the motor’s size by 70%. Meanwhile, three-axis mechanical stabilisation helps the camera compensate for movement while recording. AI takes things even further by allowing the camera to respond to its surroundings. During a video call, for example, it can move automatically to keep you in the frame. HONOR has even given the camera what it calls “emotional body language”. This allows it to nod, shake its head and perform movements such as a backflip. It can also recognise the rhythm of music and move along with the beat.

It Could Basically Become Your Personal Cameraman

The moving camera isn’t just there to make the HONOR Robot Phone look futuristic. HONOR’s AI Object Tracking could make it useful for people who regularly create videos alone. Users can double-tap a subject, and the camera will lock onto it. The system then predicts the subject’s movement and follows it while recording. HONOR says the camera can find the subject again after a sudden change in direction. It can also continue tracking if the person briefly disappears from view. As a result, creators may not need to constantly reposition their phone or tripod during a shoot. The phone could handle some of that movement itself. HONOR has also introduced AI Spinshot for more creative footage. The feature lets the gimbal make 90-degree or 180-degree movements during recording. In theory, that could help creators capture more cinematic shots without carrying a separate gimbal.

So Is This Where Smartphone Cameras Are Heading Next?

HONOR is also working with professional cinema camera manufacturer ARRI on the Robot Phone’s imaging experience. The partnership aims to bring established filmmaking expertise into smartphone photography and video. Together with mechanical stabilisation, AI tracking and a moving camera, the concept offers a different direction for mobile imaging. Smartphone brands have traditionally focused on larger sensors, additional lenses and computational photography. HONOR is now exploring what happens when the camera itself can understand a scene and physically move around it. However, the company says the features shown so far are still in development. Therefore, the final interface and functions may change before consumers get the commercial version. Still, the concept raises an interesting possibility for the future. Instead of buying another accessory to follow you around while filming, your next smartphone might simply do it by itself.
