Tourist Furious After Machu Picchu Passport Stamp Stops Him From Flying To Malaysia

A Five-Year-Old Souvenir Stamp Ruined His Penang Trip

A foreign tourist’s trip to Penang didn’t even make it past the airport in Bangkok after staff found a souvenir Machu Picchu stamp inside his passport. The traveller was supposed to fly from Bangkok to Penang but was stopped from boarding because of the unofficial stamp. He later shared his frustration in a social media video and questioned the decision by AirAsia staff and Malaysian immigration authorities. According to the tourist, he received the Machu Picchu stamp around five years ago and had travelled through 11 international border crossings without facing any problems. He also claimed that he entered Malaysia from Singapore just three weeks earlier using the same passport. This time, however, the souvenir stamp became enough of an issue to stop his journey before he could even board the flight.

He Wasn’t Happy And Said He Might Try The Land Border

The tourist was clearly unhappy about the situation, especially since he had planned to meet friends at a cultural festival in George Town. In his video, he criticised the decision and said the experience gave him “another reason” why Malaysia wasn’t his first choice. He then suggested that he might try entering the country through a land border instead. That comment didn’t exactly win over Malaysians online. His video quickly spread across platforms including Threads and Instagram, where many users criticised his reaction. Some argued that previous successful border crossings did not guarantee that officials would continue accepting the passport. Others took issue with his suggestion that he would simply try another Malaysian entry point after the airline had already stopped him from boarding.

Maybe Keep The Souvenir Stamps Out Of Your Passport

The incident is also a pretty useful reminder that your passport isn’t the best place to collect travel souvenirs. Unofficial stamps from tourist attractions can create problems because immigration authorities and airlines may question alterations to an official travel document. Even if a traveller previously crossed several borders without any trouble, another airline or border authority may assess the passport differently. Airlines can also refuse boarding when they believe a passenger’s travel documents may cause problems at the destination. So while getting a Machu Picchu stamp in your passport might look like a cool memory from your trip, this traveller’s experience shows why keeping those souvenir stamps in a separate travel journal might save you a lot of trouble later.
