Japanese Woman Quits High-Paying Job for Peaceful Life in Malaysia

Japanese Woman Leaves Japan’s Rat Race for Malaysia’s Calmer Pace

While many Malaysians dream of pursuing careers abroad, one Japanese woman has turned the table by doing the exact opposite. In a story that’s captured the attention of thousands on TikTok, she shared her decision to leave her high-paying job in Japan to start a new, more peaceful chapter in Malaysia.

Through a video posted on @racewonderland’s TikTok account, the woman candidly explained that although Malaysian salaries are lower, she found the quality of life to be significantly better.

“Yes, salaries in Malaysia are lower compared to Japan. But to me, that’s perfectly fine,” she said.

Long Hours, No Rest: Japan’s Work Culture Took a Toll

What many view as the dream—working in Japan with its reputation for structure and economic opportunity—was, for her, emotionally exhausting. She highlighted how her job in Japan left her with little time for herself, trapped in a high-pressure work culture that demanded long hours and rarely allowed for personal time.

The image of Japan as a land of opportunity, she said, hides the harsh realities of overwork and limited freedom.

The Hidden Cost of High Salaries in Japan

Despite earning a sizeable income in Japan, she explained how heavy taxation reduced her take-home pay significantly. Up to 30% of her salary went to taxes, and over time, the emotional strain far outweighed the financial gain.

“Every time I received my paycheck in Japan, I felt disheartened,” she admitted. “No amount of money could make up for the stress I felt.”

For her, the mental fatigue was not worth the paycheck.

Malaysia Offers Balance, Affordability, and Peace of Mind

After leaving Japan, she relocated to Malaysia — and the difference, she says, has been life-changing. Despite the lower wages, the cost of living in Malaysia was more reasonable, and more importantly, she had time to enjoy life.

She described Malaysia as offering a healthier balance between career and well-being — a trade-off that, to her, was more than worth it.

Her story resonated deeply with Malaysians online, especially those grappling with burnout and disillusionment about what success truly means.

In her own words, she traded money for peace, and that made all the difference.
