Tun Dr Mahathir Says He Never Expected Siti Hasmah To Leave So Suddenly After She Seemed Well The Night Before

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he did not expect his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, to pass away so suddenly as she had appeared well the night before. Dr Siti Hasmah died at the National Heart Institute on 28 September at the age of 100, with her family sharing that Dr Mahathir remained by her side until her final moments.

Mahathir Had Seen Her Well Just The Night Before

After 70 years of marriage, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was not prepared for how suddenly his life with Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali would come to an end. While receiving the Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, who visited the family to pay his respects, Dr Mahathir revealed that his wife’s passing had caught him off guard. He recalled that Dr Siti Hasmah had appeared to be doing well the previous night, making what happened the following morning even more unexpected. Their son Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir similarly shared that his mother had been cheerful and in good spirits the night before her condition suddenly deteriorated.

After 70 Years Together, Mahathir Stayed With Her Until The End

Their son Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir later shared that Dr Mahathir remained beside his wife until her final moments, adding another deeply personal detail to a relationship Malaysians had watched for decades. Dr Mahathir and Dr Siti Hasmah married in 1956 after meeting while studying medicine, and together they raised seven children. Dr Siti Hasmah built her own distinguished career as a doctor and public health advocate, including becoming the first woman appointed as a medical officer in Kedah’s Maternal and Child Health Department in 1965. She later became Kedah’s State Maternal and Child Health Officer before retiring from government service in 1979.

Malaysia Said Goodbye To Siti Hasmah With A State Funeral

Dr Siti Hasmah died at IJN at 9.20am on 28 September, less than three months after celebrating her 100th birthday. The government accorded her a state funeral in recognition of her contributions to healthcare, education and community welfare. After funeral prayers at Masjid As-Syarif in Seri Kembangan, she was laid to rest at Pusara Negara in Precinct 20, Putrajaya, at 6.20pm, surrounded by Dr Mahathir, their children and other family members. For a couple whose marriage stretched across seven decades of Malaysian history, Dr Mahathir’s brief recollection of seeing his wife well just hours earlier captured the deeply personal loss behind a moment of national mourning.
