In a recent ruling, the Shah Alam Sessions Court slapped KK Supermart and Superstore Sdn Bhd with a RM60,000 fine for selling socks featuring the word ‘Allah’, which hurt the religious feelings of many back in March.

The court also fined Xin Jian Chang Sdn Bhd, one of their suppliers, the same amount for conspiring in the offense under Section 298 of the Penal Code, as reported by the New Straits Times. Both companies admitted to the charges related to wounding religious sentiments.

Interestingly, the founder of KK Mart, Datuk Seri Chai Kee Kan, and his wife, Datin Seri Loh Siew Mui, were acquitted and released as the prosecution chose not to continue with the case against them.

Three directors from the supplier Xin Jian Chang Sdn Bhd — Soh Chin Huat, Soh Hui San, and Goh Li Huay — also received a discharge and acquittal.

Judge Muhamad Anas Mahadzir granted a full acquittal to Chai, Loh, and the three directors after considering the defense’s argument that the case warranted more than just a simple withdrawal of charges.

Malaysiakini reported that while the prosecution sought a discharge not amounting to an acquittal, the court sided with the defense for a full acquittal.
