Thousands of local football fans gathered at Dataran Merdeka in the early hours of the morning to watch the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina. What was meant to be a memorable celebration of football turned into a disappointing sight after the final whistle, with rubbish left scattered across the historic field once the event had ended.

DBKL Expresses Disappointment

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) shared its disappointment by posting images showing the condition of Dataran Merdeka after the public screening. “It is sad to see the condition of Dataran Merdeka after the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina. Early this morning, thousands gathered to cheer, celebrate football and share the joy. But when the cheering ended, this historic field was left covered with rubbish. DBKL will clean it up. Our staff will collect what has been left behind, but the cleanliness of Kuala Lumpur should not always depend on someone else coming to clean up after we leave,” the statement read.

“Treat Kuala Lumpur Like Your Home”

DBKL also reminded the public that Dataran Merdeka is a symbol of the nation’s dignity and history, and how people leave it behind reflects how much they value it. “A great city is not judged only by the number of people who come, but by the condition they leave behind when they go home. Kuala Lumpur is our home. Take care of it as you would your own home,” DBKL said.
