Durian Prices Drop Sharply Across Malaysia As Oversupply Pushes Prices To As Low As RM2 Per Fruit

Durian Lovers Enjoy Massive Price Drops This Season

Durian season has arrived with good news for fruit lovers across Malaysia as prices have fallen dramatically due to an oversupply in the market. Social media has been flooded with photos and videos showing wholesale vendors selling large quantities of durians at prices rarely seen before. Some local durian varieties are reportedly being sold for as little as RM2 per fruit, while premium varieties such as Musang King have been spotted selling for around RM15 per kilogram. Given the fruit’s short shelf life, many sellers are introducing aggressive promotions to clear stock before the fruits spoil.

Wholesale Sellers Offer Bulk Deals To Clear Stock

Many buyers have taken advantage of the unusually low prices, with some wholesalers offering customers the opportunity to fill plastic bags or sacks with as many durians as possible for a fixed price. Several social media users shared their experiences purchasing large quantities of fresh durians at bargain prices. One customer claimed to have purchased a full bag for RM40, while another said a wholesaler was offering up to 11 durians in a plastic bag for only RM20, provided the bag did not tear. The promotions have attracted large crowds as consumers look to make the most of the peak durian season.

FAMA Explains Cause Of Oversupply

The Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) has clarified that the current oversupply is not caused by weak demand for local durians. According to FAMA deputy director-general (Food Security and Operations) Faisal Iswardi Ismail, the situation is largely due to an influx of export-grade durian clones from younger orchards. Many of these fruits reportedly fail to meet export requirements for markets such as China and Singapore, resulting in more supply being redirected to the domestic market. A durian vendor also told local media that the surge in supply may be linked to several major durian-producing states, including Penang, Perak, Johor and Melaka, entering peak harvest season at roughly the same time.
