Trader Exposes Fake Receipt Scam
A trader known as Ashhry recently revealed a suspected scam involving a woman who allegedly used edited receipts to trick cashiers. According to the claim, the woman would first ask for the restaurant’s WiFi password before opening her phone gallery to edit a fake payment receipt, making it appear as if she had already completed a transaction. She would then show the receipt to the cashier and leave, assuming the payment had gone through, but Ashhry was able to detect that no transaction was actually received through his system.
Same Modus Operandi Used Repeatedly
The trader further claimed that the same individual had been using a similar tactic at nearby shops, some of which were successfully deceived. He said his system allowed real-time transaction checks, which helped prevent losses, unlike other stores that may not have strict verification procedures. Ashhry also stated that he collected CCTV footage from nearby businesses to support the claim, and alleged that the woman had a history of document forgery cases and had previously served 22 weeks in prison for fraud-related offences.
QR Payment Scams Becoming More Common
Cases like this are becoming increasingly common with the advancement of technology, as scammers are now believed to use specific applications to generate fake receipts that closely resemble real ones. The method typically involves scanning a QR code, entering the payment amount into a fake app, and showing a convincing receipt on screen without actually transferring any money. Traders are advised to always verify transactions directly through their accounts, use soundbox payment alerts, carefully inspect receipts, and request proof of payment after QR scans to avoid being scammed.
