Saloma Bridge ‘Taken Over’ by Freelance Photographers, Tourists Upset

Saloma Bridge Overrun by Aggressive Freelance Photographers

The popular Saloma Bridge in Kuala Lumpur has recently become the center of controversy after claims that freelance photographers, often referred to as “ulat gambar”, are aggressively occupying public spaces meant for all visitors.

Locals and Tourists Pushed Aside

A local user on Threads, @turis.sesat, shared his experience of visiting Saloma Bridge to shoot content for the upcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign. However, his plans were disrupted when he encountered a group of freelance photographers who had seemingly ‘claimed’ several key photo spots as their own.

He alleged that anyone who refused to hire them was immediately shooed away, as if these individuals had ownership over the public area.

Visitors Disappointed, Public Space Hijacked

The post also mentioned that some tourists were visibly upset after being denied the opportunity to take photos at the bridge’s most scenic spots. The presence of these self-proclaimed gatekeepers has reportedly created an uncomfortable environment where only those paying for their services are allowed to fully enjoy the view.

Many are now questioning the legality and safety of allowing such behavior to continue unchecked.

Call for Action by Authorities

The user has since urged police and DBKL (City Hall) to regularly patrol iconic tourist sites such as Saloma Bridge and KLCC. He warned that if the issue is not handled soon, it may tarnish Malaysia’s reputation — just like the negative reviews received from tourists in Semporna, where complaints about cleanliness went viral.

The concern goes beyond inconvenience, with fears that these photographers could turn aggressive or threatening if their ‘territory’ is challenged, potentially putting public safety at risk.
