Mosque Condemns Scantily Clad Dancers at Batu Ferringhi Songkran Festival

A viral video showing semi-nude dancers performing during a Songkran Festival event in Batu Ferringhi has sparked outrage among the local community, especially the management of Masjid Jamek Ar-Rahman.

The mosque’s board of directors expressed strong disapproval over the incident, which took place in close proximity to their mosque. The performance featured several women in revealing outfits dancing on the top floor of a beachfront restaurant.

According to Harian Metro, the mosque chairman, Ismail Din, said the board only learned about the incident after the video began circulating on social media on Sunday, 13 April.

“The video clearly shows indecent and morally inappropriate behavior. These activities go against our values and disrespect the sensitivities of Muslims in the area,” he said.

He added that the Songkran event, which is meant to celebrate Thai New Year with water festivities, was marred by the immoral performance that, according to him, tarnished the image of Batu Ferringhi as a tourist destination.

“We urge authorities to be more cautious when approving permits for such events. There must be stricter regulations to ensure this doesn’t happen again,” he added.

The mosque board also emphasized the importance of maintaining cultural sensitivity in public events, especially when they are held in locations close to houses of worship.

The viral video has sparked debate among netizens, with many criticizing the organizers for allowing such performances in a predominantly Muslim community.
