Elderly Man Loses Life Savings to Sperm Donor Scam
Elderly Man Loses Life Savings in Sperm Donor Scam
An elderly man’s dream of helping a desperate woman have a child has turned into a nightmare after he lost his entire life savings to a sophisticated scam.
A Promise Too Good to Be True
At a press conference at Wisma MCA on June 6, Tan revealed that he is now penniless and unable to afford even a bus ticket home.
His ordeal began in early February after spotting a Facebook ad offering HKD2 million (RM1.08 million) to become a sperm donor for a housewife from Hong Kong.
The Scam Unfolds
Tan was soon contacted by a man claiming to be the woman’s lawyer. According to Tan, the so-called lawyer told him he had been “chosen to be with Lee Na to help her conceive” — allegedly because he had a “handsome face.”
The lawyer then asked for a series of payments, including RM10,000, RM30,000, and RM1,000 for registration, travel, and other costs. Tempted by the promise of an initial RM390,000 payout after completing formalities, Tan made the payments in March.
Bank’s Warning and Suspicion
Shortly after, Tan’s bank contacted him to warn he might be the victim of a scam. Despite this, the lawyer kept reassuring him that the payout was real and asked for an additional RM120,000, supposedly to cover fees for two US-based medical specialists.
Trusting the process, Tan made three more payments. But when his requests to meet Lee Na or have a video call were refused, he grew suspicious.
Realising It Was a Scam
The lawyer continued making excuses, but Tan eventually realised he had been deceived and filed a police report. He then sought help from the MCA Public Services and Complaints Department.
Warning to Others
Datuk Seri Michael Chong, the department head, stated that while Tan admitted his own poor judgment, he bravely decided to share his story to prevent others from falling victim to similar scams.
