The Ministry of Health (MOH) reported a significant surge in new COVID-19 cases, marking a 57.3% increase to 3,626 cases compared to the previous week’s tally of 2,305, according to Health director-general Datuk Dr Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan.
In a statement issued on Sunday, December 3, Dr Radzi highlighted that nearly half (48%) of the cases were identified among individuals aged 20 to 40, with 98% of them experiencing only mild symptoms. He noted that the weekly count of COVID-19 cases has consistently surpassed 1,000 cases since early October (Epidemiology Week 41, October 8 to 14).
Dr Radzi informed that eight active clusters currently contribute to a total of 121 cases, while the cumulative number of reported clusters up to Epidemiology Week 47 (November 19 to 25) stands at 7,248, with a majority linked to educational settings.
Despite the rise in cases, Dr Radzi reassured the public that the situation is under control, and existing health facilities are not strained. Hospital admissions for COVID-19 increased to 2.9 per 100,000 population compared to the previous week, with intensive care unit (ICU) bed occupancy at 0.4%.
Additionally, Dr Radzi disclosed the identification of four new Omicron variants last week, all categorized as variants of concern (VOC) by the World Health Organization (WHO). However, he emphasized that these variants do not exhibit any discernible differences in symptoms or severity.
In response to the situation, the ministry advised the public to maintain a high level of hygiene to prevent the transmission of COVID-19. Dr Radzi specifically recommended frequent hand-washing, mask-wearing in public places, and urged individuals with symptoms to rest at home and avoid public spaces.
