Govt Offers 50% Toll Discount for Chinese New Year, Spending RM20.08 Million in Compensation

The Malaysian government has decided to retract its earlier plan to abolish toll waivers during festive seasons, offering instead a 50% discount on toll charges in conjunction with Chinese New Year.
According to Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi, this initiative will cost the government approximately RM20.08 million in compensation to toll concessionaires. The discount will be available to Class 1 private vehicles from 12.01am on 27 January to 11.59pm on 28 January.
However, the discount does not apply to vehicles crossing the borders at the Sultan Iskandar Building and Tanjung Kupang toll plazas.
Background and Changes
Initially, the government announced on 21 January that toll waivers for festive seasons would be replaced with a “more targeted approach.” This decision drew criticism and sparked calls for an alternative solution.
In response, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming urged expressway concessionaires to consider a 50% toll discount as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR). The matter was later reviewed during the Cabinet meeting on 24 January, leading to the current decision.
Public Reaction and Implications
The decision to offer a toll discount instead of a full waiver has garnered mixed reactions. While some applaud the government’s effort to ease the financial burden on road users during the festive season, others feel that the move is insufficient compared to previous toll-free initiatives.
The RM20.08 million compensation to toll concessionaires underscores the cost of providing such discounts, reflecting the government’s balancing act between fiscal responsibility and public sentiment.
Key Details of the Toll Discount
• Dates: 27 January (12.01am) – 28 January (11.59pm)
• Eligible Vehicles: Class 1 private vehicles
• Exclusions: Cross-border travel at Sultan Iskandar Building and Tanjung Kupang toll plazas
Conclusion: A Gesture for Festive Joy
The government’s decision to offer a 50% toll discount for Chinese New Year reflects its effort to support Malaysians during the festive period while managing economic considerations. Although not a full waiver, the discount provides a measure of relief for road users traveling to reunite with family and friends.
As Malaysians gear up for the celebrations, this initiative is a reminder of the importance of compromise and collaboration between public agencies and private stakeholders in serving the people.
