FIFA Confirms Top African Referee Barred From 2026 World Cup After US Entry Denial
FIFA Referee Selection Ends In Disappointment

Omar Abdulkadir Artan’s dream of officiating at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has come to an abrupt end after he was reportedly denied entry into the United States despite possessing a valid visa. FIFA later confirmed that the Somali referee would not be able to perform his duties during the tournament because immigration matters fall under the authority of the United States government. Artan had been selected as one of the match officials for the tournament following years of strong performances on the international stage.
Africa’s Best Referee Turned Away Upon Arrival
Artan, who was named Africa’s Best Referee in 2025, is widely regarded as one of the continent’s most respected officials. He has overseen major international fixtures as well as CAF Champions League matches and earned a place among FIFA’s chosen referees for the 2026 World Cup based on his achievements and credibility. According to Somalia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports, Artan travelled using a valid US visa and also received assistance from the Somali Embassy in Nairobi in obtaining a diplomatic passport. Despite this, he was reportedly instructed to return after arriving in the country. Reports suggest the decision may be linked to travel restrictions affecting several countries, including Somalia. According to The Athletico, Artan was placed on a US government watchlist related to potential national security concerns.
FIFA Says Immigration Decisions Are Beyond Its Control
FIFA later released a statement clarifying that it had no authority over immigration decisions made by host nations. The organisation stated, “FIFA is not involved in the immigration processes of host countries, including visa approval matters, and has been informed by the authorities that Mr Artan’s status will not be changed at this time. As with previous FIFA tournaments, the government of the host country has absolute authority to determine who receives visas and who is permitted to enter their country.” The incident adds to a growing list of controversies surrounding entry issues ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Earlier reports also indicated that a media officer from Iraq’s national football team was detained for several hours before being deported following an investigation by US authorities.
