Is Bali’s Iconic Kelingking Beach Being Destroyed? New Glass Elevator Sparks Controversy!

The Indonesian government has started building a glass elevator and viewing platform at the famous Kelingking ‘T-Rex’ beach on Nusa Penida, Bali. This project, announced last year by Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno, aims to innovate tourism in Indonesia.

The new structure will be situated on a 182-meter-high cliff, with the elevator measuring 64 meters long and 7 meters wide. It will replace a steep and hazardous walkway, which has caused numerous injuries and even a fatality last year.

Despite the safety improvements, the project has faced significant backlash. Critics argue that the development is unsustainable and damaging to the environment.

“Please stop destroying this paradise,” pleaded one Instagram user. Another lamented, “The lost paradise. Not coming back to Bali or Nusa Penida ever again. It used to be so beautiful.”

Some have termed the project “environmental vandalism,” fearing it will lead to more commercial development. One user expressed concern that it would lead to “a beach bar, then a beach club, and eventually a resort hotel,” calling it “progress” at the cost of nature.

Others criticize the government for prioritizing uncontrolled tourism over environmental preservation. “Politicians are letting Indonesia down,” one person commented. “Locals should unite and demand a better approach from the government.”

However, some see the elevator as a necessary safety measure. “I hate to see this thing destroy the beach, but the current path is an accident waiting to happen,” noted one user, acknowledging the need for safer access to the popular beach.

The debate continues as construction progresses, leaving many to wonder: Is the glass elevator a step forward or a step too far for Bali’s beloved Kelingking Beach?
