Johor Cable Theft Gang Caught After Viral High-Speed Police Chase

A high-speed police chase through the streets of Johor Bahru led to the arrest of four suspected cable thieves, including a teenage student, early last Saturday morning.

The incident, captured on a viral dashcam video, shows police pursuing the suspects’ vehicle from a residential area onto the main road, with sirens blaring and emergency lights flashing.

Teen Student Among Suspects Arrested in Johor Bahru

According to Johor Bahru South District Police Chief ACP Raub Selamat, the pursuit began around 5:15 AM along Jalan Songket to Jalan Bunga Raya in Majidee.

Four individuals were arrested — three local men and one foreign national, aged between 16 and 26.

“The youngest suspect is still a student, while the other three are currently unemployed,” Raub said.

Three Test Positive for Meth, Two Have Criminal Records

Urine tests revealed that three of the four suspects tested positive for methamphetamine, while one tested negative.

Further checks showed that two suspects had previous records involving drugs and cable theft.

“Their arrest has helped solve six previous cable theft cases in the Johor Bahru area,” Raub added.

Police Seize Tools, Vehicle, and Stolen Cables

During the operation, police seized the suspects’ vehicle along with various tools believed to have been used for cable theft.

Stolen cable materials were also recovered from the scene, strengthening the case against the suspects.

Facing Multiple Charges Including Drug and Immigration Offenses

The suspects now face multiple charges:

  • Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft — punishable by up to seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.

  • Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug use — up to RM5,000 in fines or up to two years in prison.

  • The foreign suspect will also be charged under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, which carries a penalty of up to five years in prison, a minimum fine of RM10,000, or up to six strokes of the cane.

All four have been remanded for four days from Sunday (7 September) until tomorrow (10 September) to assist in the ongoing investigation.

Netizens Frustrated by Ongoing Cable Theft Problem

The dashcam footage, widely circulated on social media, sparked strong reactions from the public. Many expressed frustration over frequent cable thefts affecting their neighborhoods.

One security guard, Fitri Fiq, commented:

“As a TM security guard, I’m fed up with this cable theft gang. It happens four to five times a year in my area but they’re hard to catch.”
