Korean Restaurateur Balances Heavy Table of Food on His Head
In the peaceful Uidong Valley near Seoul, a restaurant has become an unexpected tourist attraction thanks to the incredible balancing skills of its owner, Kang Jin-gyu.
Carrying a Fully Set Table with Just His Head
Rather than relying on hands or trolleys, Kang delivers food to diners by balancing a fully loaded 10-seater table — including all dishes and drinks — on his head. Weighing up to 36kg, the entire setup is carried with remarkable ease and control.
Kang, 55, said the practice started as a way to reduce strain on his hands. “I am very used to it now. I am well-trained,” he told South China Morning Post.
Precision, Balance, and Unbelievable Strength
To maintain better balance, Kang doesn’t rest the table squarely on the top of his head. Instead, he positions it slightly off-centre, allowing for subtle shifts in weight as he moves. Whether navigating narrow paths, stairs, or even rainy days — with the help of a plastic sheet acting as a makeshift umbrella — Kang handles each trip with confidence.
The feat isn’t just a party trick. Kang makes this trip roughly 150 times daily, delivering food to eager customers with precision. Many patrons attempt to mimic his balancing act, usually ending in laughter and failure.
A Tradition Rooted in Korean Culture
Carrying heavy objects on the head isn’t new to Korean heritage. In earlier times, women would transport large water pots weighing over 20kg on their heads. However, such practices have faded with modern conveniences, making Kang’s ability even more extraordinary in today’s world.
“It is tough work, but I always try my best so I don’t get complaints,” Kang said humbly, despite the awe his performances inspire.
