Car Following GPS Plunges Into Construction Pit, Five Chinese Tourists Injured In Kelantan

GPS Navigation Leads Car Into Construction Site

A Kelantan GPS accident left five Chinese nationals injured after the vehicle they were travelling in reportedly drove into an active culvert construction site in Machang late Tuesday night. The incident occurred at KM41, Jalan Kota Bharu–Kuala Krai at around 11.30pm on 1 July.

According to Machang District Police Chief Superintendent Azuhar Md Nor, the Toyota Prius was travelling from Temangan towards Tok Bali with five Chinese nationals on board when the accident happened.

Five Occupants Rescued And Hospitalised

Initial police investigations found that the 66-year-old driver was relying on a navigation application before the vehicle entered a road section that was still under construction and not yet open to the public. The car subsequently plunged into the excavation area.

Emergency services were alerted shortly after midnight following reports from members of the public. Rescue teams successfully brought all five occupants—three men and two women aged between 40 and 66—to safety before they were transported to Hospital Machang for treatment. Authorities have not disclosed the severity of their injuries.

Police Remind Drivers Not To Rely Solely On GPS

The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving. Police have reminded motorists to remain alert, particularly when travelling at night, by paying close attention to warning signs, traffic cones and road barriers around construction areas.

Authorities also advised drivers not to depend entirely on GPS navigation, as temporary road closures and ongoing construction works may not always be reflected accurately on navigation applications. Police also thanked members of the public who quickly contacted emergency responders, allowing rescue operations to begin without delay.
