The Malaysian Ministry of Health (KKM) has banned the popular Pei Pa Koa ice cream, as the cough syrup it’s made from is classified as a controlled substance.
In a post on their X (formerly Twitter) page, KKM issued a statement regarding the ban. The ministry highlighted, “Prohibition of the sale of ice cream products mixed with Pei Pa Koa cough medicine.”
They clarified that Pei Pa Koa, known as Cap Ibu dan Anak, is a traditional cough remedy registered with the Drug Control Authority under registration number MAL06061564T. It’s typically used to soothe sore throats and coughs but is not recommended for pregnant women, as indicated on its label.
KKM explained that under Section 13B (2) of the Food Act 1983, it is illegal to prepare or sell any mixed foods containing such substances. Offenders could face fines up to RM20,000, imprisonment for up to 5 years, or both.
The ministry ordered all businesses selling Pei Pa Koa ice cream to immediately cease operations for public safety. They also called for the removal of all related advertisements and marketing materials.
