Lok Lok Truck Nightmare: 27 Friends Suffer Food Poisoning During Genting Getaway

What was supposed to be a fun-filled vacation turned into a painful experience for a group of 36 friends after they allegedly suffered severe food poisoning following a dinner catered by a lok lok truck in Genting Sempah, Pahang.
The unfortunate incident occurred on 1 February, during their three-day, two-night staycation to celebrate Chinese New Year. After spotting a lok lok truck catering for their neighbours, the group decided to hire it to serve dinner for 40 people that evening.
According to one of the attendees, Connie Tew, the lok lok truck driver confirmed the arrangement after contacting his employer. Unfortunately, just four hours after dinner, several members of the group started showing symptoms of food poisoning — vomiting and diarrhoea.
27 People Out of 36 Fell Sick, Two Hospitalised
By the following morning, the situation worsened, with two individuals requiring hospitalisation and several others seeking medical attention at nearby clinics. In total, 27 out of the 36 friends fell ill. Some had to take sick leave from work, while children who attended international schools missed several classes.
The group claimed their medical expenses amounted to RM3,375, in addition to the RM2,000 paid for the catering service. Despite their attempts to seek compensation, the lok lok truck company allegedly refused to take responsibility, instead shifting the blame to the truck driver.
“They claimed the driver accepted the job independently and tried to suggest we got food poisoning from something we ate earlier that day,” Tew explained. However, she countered this by stating that her friends had eaten in five separate groups earlier that day, yet all still fell ill after the same dinner.
A Message to All Food Business Owners
Tew clarified that she shared her story not to recover the money, but to raise awareness about the importance of hygiene in the food industry.
“If you witnessed your friends suffering for two to three days, would you feel okay?” she asked.
She urged food business owners to prioritise food safety and hygiene, reminding them that food poisoning can have severe consequences.
