Malaysia Ranks 4th Best Country in Asia for Expats

Malaysia has achieved the fourth spot as the best country in Asia for expatriates to live in, according to a recent survey by InterNations. Kuala Lumpur, among 49 cities, stood out by securing eighth place globally and third in Asia as the best city to live in.

InterNations conducted the survey with input from over 12,000 expats globally, representing 177 nationalities across 181 countries or territories. The rankings considered factors such as adaptability, personal finances, and overall quality of life. 

The top 10 expat destinations for 2023, as revealed by the survey, are as follows: 

Mexico 

Spain 

Panama 

Malaysia 

Taiwan 

Thailand 

Costa Rica 

Philippines 

Bahrain 

Portugal 

Mexico claimed the top spot, consistently ranking high since 2014, while Spain secured second place for its leisure options and culture. Panama took the third spot, known for its affordable and accessible housing. 

On the flip side, the bottom 10 expat locations for 2023 include:

New Zealand 

Malta 

Italy 

South Africa 

Germany 

South Korea 

Türkiye 

Norway 

Kuwait 

Expatriates expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of life and leisure options in Kuwait. Norway was perceived as both “expensive and unfriendly,” while Türkiye secured the 51st place with respondents citing “low job satisfaction.”
