Malaysian Singer Serving Life Sentence for Cannabis Charges Released & Sent Back to Hospital Bahagia

Composer and singer Muhammad Yasin Sulaiman, previously convicted on three drug-related charges, has been acquitted by the Court of Appeal on 28 April 2025. He is ordered to be returned to Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta, Perak, pending approval from the Sultan of Selangor.

Earlier, Yasin was sentenced to life imprisonment and 16 strokes of the cane by the Shah Alam High Court. The decision was overturned by a panel of Court of Appeal judges led by Justice Che Mohd Ruzima Ghazali, along with Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah and Datuk Azmi Ariffin.

The original charges included possession of 193.7 grams of cannabis, cultivation of 17 cannabis plants, and drug consumption. The incident took place at a condominium in Kota Damansara on 24 March 2022.

Following the verdict, Yasin was immediately sent to Kajang Prison before being transferred to Hospital Bahagia, where he remained under royal order.

Now, with the latest decision, he will continue treatment at Hospital Bahagia while awaiting formal consent for his placement.

This case serves as a rare instance of a life sentence being overturned in Malaysia’s strict drug laws, highlighting the complexities involved when mental health factors are in play.
