March 24 (Reuters) – McDonald’s has pulled the plug on its partnership in Sri Lanka, and all 12 outlets across the country are now shut tight, according to a lawyer representing the American fast-food giant.
“The big boss up there decided to call it quits with the local partner due to some standard issues,” explained Sanath Wijewardane, the attorney representing McDonald’s. “They’re out of business in the country for now. Maybe they’ll think about making a comeback with a fresh partner someday.”
The deal was axed last Wednesday, but the stores kept flipping burgers for a few more days before finally closing their doors.
When questioned about the split, a spokesperson for the local partner, Abans, chose to stay mum.
As for the reasons behind the breakup, Wijewardane kept his lips sealed, but word on the street is that McDonald’s wasn’t lovin’ the hygiene standards at Abans.
According to its website, Abans first teamed up with McDonald’s back in 1998.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka, home to 22 million folks and nestled in the Indian Ocean, is trying to bounce back from a hefty financial crisis. Tough times all around, indeed!
