The call to prayer “Pray at your house” applies during emergencies and disasters, according to the Mufti.
An extraordinary event occurred in the climate history of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Tuesday when the country experienced the heaviest rainfall recorded in 75 years. Breaking previous records since data collection began in 1949, heavy rain affected many areas across the country. More worryingly, continuous rain within less than 24 hours caused several vehicles to be submerged in water. Following this incident, mosques in the UAE began advising residents to perform prayers at their own homes.
It is understood that the phrase “Hayya ‘alas-salāh, Hayya ‘alal-falāh” was replaced with “Sollū fī Rihālikum,” which means “Pray at your house.”
This has raised questions for some individuals who heard the phrase being called out in the country through viral videos on social media. Regarding this matter, according to the Federal Territory Mufti’s Office, the phrase is permissible to be called out during emergencies or disasters in a particular place. It is a Sunnah when faced with a difficult situation that makes it hard for someone to go to the mosque.
Based on the narrations of Imam al-Bukhari and Muslim in their books, it is explained that this event occurred during the time of the Prophet Muhammad.
From Ibn Umar, he said that he called out the adhan on a cold and windy night, saying:
ألا صلُوا فِي الرِحالِ, ثُم قال: إِن رسُول اللهِ صلى اللهُ عليهِ وسلم كان يأمُرُ المُؤذِن إِذا كانت ليلة ذاتُ بردٍ ومطرٍ, يقُولُ: ألا صلُوا فِي الرِحالِ
Meaning: “Pray at your home.” Then he said: “Verily, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, used to command the muezzin when the night was cold and rainy, saying: “Pray in your homes.'” [Narrated by al-Bukhari (666) and Muslim (697)]
Additionally, it is also narrated by Imam Ahmad and Abu Daud in their books.
From Usamah bin ‘Umair, he said:
أن يوم حُنينٍ كان يوم مطرٍ, فأمر النبِيُ صلى اللهُ عليهِ وسلم, مُنادِيهُ: أن الصلاة فِي الرِحالِ
Meaning: On the day of the Hunaian War, it rained heavily. So the Prophet, peace be upon him, instructed his caller to announce: “Pray at home.” [Narrated by Abu Daud (1057) and Ahmad (20700)]
