Local football fans were shocked today as CCTV footage showing national winger Faisal Halim being attacked with acid at a shopping mall in Damansara went viral.
The video reveals a man in a cap waiting for Faisal as he approached his car, then throwing acid on him.
Immediately after being splashed with acid, Faisal ran for safety while a woman, believed to be his wife, chased the assailant who escaped on a motorcycle with an accomplice.
The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) had earlier released a sketch of the suspect involved in the acid attack.
According to an official statement, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain stated that the suspect is estimated to be around 30 years old, about 165 centimeters tall.
He described the suspect as having a medium build and tan skin.
Anyone with information about the individual in the sketch is urged to contact the investigating officer from the Special Criminal Investigation Unit, Prosecution/Law Division (D6), Criminal Investigation Department Bukit Aman, Inspector M. Jagachandran at 012-6848166 / 03-2266 6071 or to report to the nearest police station.
Selangor FC (SFC) CEO Dr. Johan Kamal Hamidon revealed that Faisal Halim was splashed with concentrated sulfuric acid, causing fourth-degree burns.
Concentrated sulfuric acid, H2SO4, is a colorless but highly dangerous liquid due to its corrosive nature, which can cause severe blisters and burns upon contact with the skin.
A social media user explained that sulfuric acid is easily available at hardware stores and is commonly used for clearing clogged pipes.
This incident marks the second attack involving a Harimau Malaya player, following Akhyar Rashid who was beaten and robbed, resulting in stitches to his head and leg.
