In a beautiful twist of fate, newlyweds Mohamed Khairie Mohamed Kamal, 28, and Nur Izzatul Asma Mustafa, 22, transformed their wedding day into a charitable mission after floods disrupted their plans in Kedah.

The couple, who had initially planned a grand reception for 1,200 guests at a homestay in Titi Besi, Kepala Batas, faced an unexpected challenge when the venue was submerged by floodwaters on 30 November. Undeterred, they relocated their event to the bride’s grandfather’s home in Kampung Hutan Kandis, Alor Setar, with a scaled-down guest list.

Instead of letting the catered food go to waste, the couple decided to donate it. Packed meals were distributed to friends, family, tahfiz centres, and the public, bringing joy to those affected by the disaster.

“It is indeed sad because we had to hold the wedding yesterday followed by the reception today in a flood situation, but I accept this fate,” Nur Izzatul said while personally handing out food and gifts in Kepala Batas.

The couple had spent RM20,000 on their dream wedding, planned since May. Despite the disruption, Nur Izzatul expressed her gratitude to guests who braved the conditions—some arriving by boat and four-wheel drive—to attend the ceremony.

Making the best of the situation, the couple even took unique wedding photographs with floodwaters as their backdrop. Photos showed them sitting in a boat and atop a four-wheel drive, capturing the moment with a bittersweet touch.

Mohamed Khairie reflected on the surreal experience, saying, “I usually see such situations on TV and social media, but I never thought I’d go through it myself. However, we have accepted it as we can’t do anything else.”
