Nissan GT-R R36 To Arrive Before 2030 With VR38 Engine?

GT-R R36 Is Getting Closer

After the Nissan GT-R R35 officially ended production in August 2025, attention has shifted to its long-awaited successor, the R36. Fans around the world have been waiting for updates, and new information suggests the next-generation GT-R could arrive before the end of this decade.

Expected Launch Timeline Revealed

According to Nissan North America’s Senior Vice President and Chief Planning Officer, Ponz Pandikuthira, more concrete announcements are expected by 2028, with the R36 potentially debuting before 2030. This gives a clearer timeline for what has been one of the most anticipated performance car releases.

A Completely New GT-R

Ponz explained that the R36 will be built on an entirely new chassis, making it a fully new model rather than an evolution of the R35. A dedicated team in Japan is currently working on developing the next-generation GT-R to meet expectations from its loyal fanbase.

VR38 Engine Might Still Live On

Despite being a new model, the iconic VR38 engine used in the R35 may still play a role in the R36. Ponz suggested that if a hybrid powertrain is introduced, the VR38 remains a strong foundation. However, major changes could be made to how the engine operates, including differences in combustion, cylinder head design, and piston structure.

Evolution Instead Of Replacement

Instead of completely replacing the VR38, Nissan may choose to heavily evolve it to suit modern requirements, especially if hybrid technology is involved. This approach could allow the R36 to retain part of its identity while adapting to new performance and efficiency demands.
