Not Again! Malaysians Criticize the New MyBorderPass App for International Travel – Is It Really Worth It?
Source: TRP
The MyBorderPass app, launched recently by the Immigration Department, aims to smoothen international travel for Malaysians, but it’s already facing major backlash. The app requires travelers to download it and fill in their travel details before using the new QR code immigration clearance system at airports, starting this month.
While the feature promises quicker immigration processing at KLIA’s special lanes, many Malaysians are far from impressed. The Ministry of Home Affairs, led by Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, clarified that the QR code clearance system is currently in the trial phase at 40 dedicated lanes at both Terminals 1 and 2 of Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
But here’s where the controversy begins. The MyBorderPass app, which is available on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store, requires users to verify their face for security purposes. Not only that, but it seems to complicate an already efficient system. The standard autogate system will still be in use alongside this new app-based system.
Now, here’s the real kicker – despite the promises of convenience, people are complaining about having to download yet another app. “Another bloated and useless app” is the phrase many are using to describe their feelings. The concerns about privacy are also hard to ignore, especially with recent data breaches and the fear of personal information being mishandled.
Additionally, the question that many are asking: Why wasn’t the already existing MySejahtera app expanded to include this feature? Why create yet another app, which many believe is redundant and wasteful? And what exactly is the role of the MyDigitalID in all of this?In the end, while clearing immigration faster is appreciated, some netizens have jokingly pointed out that they will now have to wait longer for their luggage to arrive instead. The general sentiment is clear — people are tired of constantly downloading new apps just to make their daily lives a little easier.
