Chinese Tourists Cause Chaos in Penang Cable Car Over Photo Spot

Chinese Tourists Spark Fight in Penang Cable Car Over Photo Spot

A peaceful sightseeing trip on Penang Hill quickly spiralled into a heated altercation when two Chinese women turned the cable car ride into their personal photo studio.

According to eyewitnesses, the drama began when the pair positioned themselves at the very front of the gondola, blocking the scenic view for everyone else. Phones in hand, they were ready to capture every second — but their actions drew murmurs of discontent from fellow passengers.

From Polite Requests to Full-Blown Argument

Initially, other passengers politely asked the women to move or share the space. However, the situation escalated when one of the women snapped back, telling them to “shut up” so she could continue filming uninterrupted.

Her companion soon joined in, defending their decision to stay put and clashing verbally with passengers who criticised their monopolisation of the prime spot.

Regional Insults Add Fuel to the Fire

The heated exchange took an uglier turn when the women hurled regional insults at another Chinese passenger they assumed was from Shanghai, mocking that “Shanghai people are famous throughout China for having no class.”

They reportedly continued to make mocking faces and gestures, further provoking the crowd, even as the cable car neared its destination.

Viral Backlash on Social Media

Footage of the incident quickly spread on Chinese social media, climbing the trending charts. The majority of online users condemned the women’s behaviour, saying they had “embarrassed China abroad.”

Some netizens called for the focus to remain on the rude actions rather than fuelling geographic stereotypes, while others saw the incident as a cautionary tale of how the pursuit of perfect social media content can ruin shared experiences.

For the cable car operators, this was certainly not the kind of tourist highlight they had in mind for their brochures.
