Proper Driving Techniques When Navigating Flooded Roads

During rainy seasons, we may find ourselves having to navigate through roads submerged in water. This situation can be challenging, but with some proper driving techniques, we can enhance safety and reduce risks.
Here are the driving techniques to consider:
- Avoid Directly Entering Floods
- Most importantly, avoid driving through floods if possible. Do not assume that if the car in front of you successfully crosses, your car can too. It is safer to look for alternative routes.
- Drive Slowly and in Low Gear
- If you must traverse the water, drive slowly and use low gear or second gear. A low speed, around 20km/h, is safer.
- Do Not Release the Accelerator and Keep the Engine Revving
- Do not release the accelerator and keep the engine revving to prevent water from entering through the exhaust and airbox. For manual cars, avoid changing gears while navigating the flood. For automatic cars, keep it in Drive or a lower gear.
- Stay Calm and Avoid Speeding
- Stay calm and avoid driving at high speeds. Driving fast in floodwaters can cause loss of tire traction and lead to aquaplaning, where the tires ride on a layer of water and lose contact with the road.
If you experience aquaplaning, grip the steering wheel firmly and release the accelerator until the tires regain traction.
After successfully navigating the flood, test the brake system first. Press the brake pedal gradually to ensure it functions properly. After that, grip the steering wheel tightly and apply the brakes several times to dry out the brake system.
Drive safely, and be mindful of the dangers of flooded roads, as the water’s depth is uncertain. For your safety, avoid driving through floods when possible. If trapped, leave the vehicle and prioritize your safety. Avoid unnecessary risks.
