Malaysian Nearly Loses RM300 to Fake “Reservation Fee” Scam Linked to Rembayung Restaurant

The opening of Rembayung, a highly anticipated restaurant by Malaysian celebrity chef Khairul Aming, has drawn massive public interest, but scammers are already taking advantage of the hype.

Scammer Poses as Rembayung Admin, Demands RM300

A Malaysian social media user recently shared a screenshot on Threads showing a conversation with an account posing as Rembayung’s official admin. When asked about reservations, the fake account demanded a RM300 “reservation fee” and even provided a personal bank account number.

Fortunately, the user did not proceed with the payment and instead sought clarification from other netizens, raising awareness of the scam before any money was transferred.

Official Reservation Rules Tell a Different Story

In reality, Rembayung’s official reservation system clearly states that diners are only required to pay a RM10 deposit per person, not hundreds of ringgit.

The restaurant is currently fully booked until 12 January, with reservations only reopening at the end of each week. Each booking requires a minimum of two guests and allows up to eight guests per table. Tables are also held for only 15 minutes before being released to other diners.

Only Contact Rembayung Through Official Channels

Rembayung has emphasised that all reservations must be made through its official website, and any enquiries should only be directed to its verified Instagram and TikTok accounts. Any request for large upfront payments or transfers to personal bank accounts should immediately raise red flags.

With the restaurant’s popularity still surging, diners are reminded to stay vigilant and double-check sources before making any payments online.
