Yikes! A fun day out at Che Minah Sayang Recreational Park in Maran, Pahang, recently turned sour with a rotavirus outbreak affecting at least fifteen children and a 27-year-old woman.

The group began experiencing stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever. The Maran Health Department was alerted to an Acute Gastroenteritis (AGE) outbreak among children on September 5th.

Initially suspected to be leptospirosis (from rat urine), laboratory tests confirmed it was a rotavirus infection.

All affected children, aged 2 to 11, are recovering well after treatment at Hospital Jengka. The woman, who is the mother of one of the children, was treated as an outpatient and is also on the mend.

So what ruined their day? According to Kosmo, the rotavirus outbreak was likely caused by the river being contaminated with waste from disposable diapers. Ewww…

As a result, the Pahang Health Department (JKNP) has advised park management to clean up the area and ensure all food premises are maintained properly.

Meanwhile, the public is advised to avoid bringing unwell children and elderly individuals to the park.

Most importantly, JKNP stressed the need for proper public health practices, urging people to dispose of used baby diapers properly and avoid littering in recreational parks. Let’s keep our parks clean, folks!
